Additional
Costs to Consider
When
Designing a New Booth
When it comes to designing a
new booth, most companies focus on the layout and graphics
and don't take into consideration the aspects of the booth
that will cost or save them money each time they
exhibit. With a little forethought and planning, you
can make a significant dent in your exhibit costs at
each show on your calendar.
Weight of your exhibit is an important factor
considering that you must pay for drayage at each
show. Drayage is the cost, based on weight, that you
pay the union to deliver your booth to and from the delivery
truck or warehouse.
Another consideration is
storage costs. If you store your booth at an exhibit
house, the storage is billed based on the bulk of your
crates. The more compact your cases, the less you will
pay.
The final consideration is
setup and dismantle costs. Since labor is charged by
the hour, the complexity of installing your booth directly
affects your show expenses.
When
it comes to exhibiting, every little bit you can save
helps. By planning ahead, and taking all factors into
consideration, a new booth purchase can create a leaner and
meaner exhibit program while giving your company a more
impressive image at industry shows.

Background:
18 years as an
attorney-turned-legal technology consultant, CLE speaker and
author on legal technology topics across the world. Over 600 law
firms and legal departments served. Over 1100 presentations on
legal technology topics since 1985 and 300+ articles. Feels like a
lifetime...but it’s still a blast every day! 1986
graduate of Marquette University Law School – Law Review member,
licensed to practice in Wisconsin.
Industry
Involvement: I have heavily been involved in National, State
and Local Bar activities for many years including serving on the
ABA TECHSHOW Executive Board for five years and serving as the
Chair of the ABA Law Practice Management Section’s Computer
& Technology Division for four years, among other things. I
have been the Co-Chair for CLE Planning for the Mid-Size Firm and
Small Firm tracks at all U.S. LegalTech events since 1999, working
with my friend, Andy Adkins from the Legal Technology Institute. I
was a long-time columnist, co-writing “The Circuit Court” for
Law Office Computing for many years. I have organized and run the
unique Annual Consultants and Technologists’ Dinner which is
held during ABA TECHSHOW every March/April in Chicago. This
lavish, invitation-only social event brings together 120+ of the
legal technology marketplace’s top influencers and
decision-makers as well as leading vendors and sponsors.
Hobbies:
My kidlets are the ultimate hobby – Jordan’s 11 and Hayley’s
still in her terrible two’s at 6. Second
runner up would be my pathetic but lovable little car collection
– my “baby” is a ’78 Triumph Spitfire named “Tricia”
– have had her since ’86 and she’s definitely a member of
the family. The other one is “Joachim” – he’s a 1974 BMW
3.0CS coupe – a big German cruiser with room for the kidlets.
