Industry Involvement:  Today, I am a consultant (working with a number of law firms and West Group in the development and deployment of West km), a writer (this year I completed a Workbook on Knowledge Management and have started another book intended as a blueprint for law office technology), and a teacher (an adjunct professor of law at Chicago-Kent School of Law).

Background: My background in legal technology is best described by Joseph Campbell, commenting on an essay by Schopenhauer: “When you reach an advanced age and look back over your lifetime, it can seem to have had a consistent order and plan, as though composed by some novelist. Events that when they occurred has seemed accidental and of little moment turn out to have been indispensable factors in the composition of a consistent plot.”  I may be more challenged than most in searching for the plan or consistency, but the wealth of experience has been exhilarating. I started in the profession with law degrees from Oxford University and Harvard Law School. I practiced law at a variety of law firms including Messrs. Withers (London), Skadden Arps (New York), Jones Day (Dallas) and White Koch (Santa Fe).  It was at the Santa Fe firm that I first started experimenting with computers, teaching myself the “C” computer language and building document assembly systems to help with my practice.  I spent the next several years developing software systems for Dorsey & Whitney (Minneapolis); then directing strategic planning at Jones Day (Cleveland); and as the CIO at Kirkland & Ellis (Chicago).

Hobbies: Sailing:  I have a J/80 moored not far from my apartment in Chicago.  It is very fast, and very wet; a perfect means to clear the head after a hectic day or long road trip.  My other hobbies include cooking (getting better), and golf (getting worse).

Pet Peeve: In an industry that should be constantly exploring new avenues, we are too often faced with close-mindedness.
